Justice for the Famine Victims Committee

Justice for the Famine Victims Committee is a grassroots campaign demanding historical truth and public accountability.

In Kilrush, County Clare, the Vandeleur name still decorates a public garden – yet there is no mention of the tens of thousands they evicted to starve, or the 20,000+ buried in mass graves during An Gorta Mór, the Great Hunger.

We believe public spaces should honour the victims, not the perpetrators.

This campaign calls for:

  • A new name for the Vandeleur Walled Garden
  • A permanent memorial to those who died on the Vandeleur estate
  • Recognition from local and national leaders – silence serves the oppressors

Kilrush was chosen for Ireland’s National Famine Commemoration in 2013 for a reason—because it was one of the hardest-hit areas in the country. The Vandeleur family played the central role in that devastation.

Yet today, the garden is marketed as a feel-good tourist attraction—with no serious consideration for the horrors behind the name Vandeleur.

We need to change that.

The Vandeleur name still hangs over a public garden in Kilrush—while their victims lie in mass graves, their names lost and forgotten.
We call for a new name and a permanent memorial to those who suffered and died under Vandeleur control during the Great Hunger.
